At 17 he went to Japan as an exchange student at a time when you had to make a reservation with an international operator to make a call home. At 18 he studied in Mexico his first semester and met David Alfaro Siqueros, one of Mexico's famous muralist. In 1976, Steve backpacked throughout Europe and Israel, a country he has been to 12 times.

Eventually Steve went to law school, met his wife Ava, worked for two insurance defense firms, then opened his practice January 1, 1990. His daughter Shana was born one week later. His son Aaron made Aliya to Israel.
