At a recent meeting, Zubair Bakubye updated Del Mar-Solana Beach Rotary members on two humanitarian projects in Bugiri, Uganda, for which DMSB Rotary took funding leadership roles.  As a Rotarian and citizen of Uganda with a B.A. from UC Riverside and M.P.A. from California State San Bernardino, Mr. Bakubye was significantly involved in both projects.

The first project provided sewing machines, computers, training in their use, and counselling for neglected former female child soldiers of war and their children in Bugiri.  One of the most rampant forms of terror in this area had been the abduction and forced recruitment of children - many of them young girls - into the Lord Resistance Army (LRA).  As a result of this $33,500 project, Mr. Bakubye reported that “the women have become more self-sufficient and a positive part of the local community rather than being outside of it.”

The second project provided clean water for a Bugiri hospital.  The existing water system had been under-designed and had become severely deteriorated.  In fact, the hospital had been without clean, running water for 8 years.  This $37,500 Rotary project corrected the problem by boring a new well, refurbishing the hospital’s water tank, and installing new pumps, pipes, and a generator.
