We had a spec-aztecular meeting today. George Sousa led us in the pledge while Susheela Narayan, who did not make the meeting, mailed in her inspirational message. Susheela implored us to apply Rotary’s Four-Way test every day. Not a bad thought Susheela. This will lead to making the world a better place.

We had many fine guests today. Liz Martin returned to pay us a look see. Sharon Fogg and Hannah Fogg were in the house. Old friend Doug Allred came by as well. Rich, the president of the San Marcos Rotary Club came to hear Coach Long. He was duly impressed with our enthusiasm. Don Welles was back. Bill Sousa, George’s son, was with dear old dad. And Rocky Long was here as well.

The meeting began with Don Welles, executive director of Just In Time, receiving a check from our club bocce tournament in the amount of over $9,700. Don thanked us for our partnership and spoke of the connections the kids make with us and others as the age out of the foster kids programs. We enjoy the partnership, too, Don.

There was a good amount of happiness around the crowded room today.

Bill Murphy returned to the fold and offered up $20 for having moved his father from Boston to San Diego. A challenging journey, but they made it.

Kevin Cahill was all tapped out except for $5 which he gladly paid. Kevin spent the rest of the money on meat and other delicacies for son Michael who returned from college. The thinking was, Michael had more than his fair share of Top Ramen or pizza.

Paul Butler was $10 happy because he’s that kind of guy. And, Rich, the president of the Rotary club in San Diego contributed $5 for being a part of such a lively, morning club.

Richard Fogg did not need too much encouragement as he happily gave $100 for having wife Sharon (an SDSU alumn), daughter Hannah (a SDSU student) Lindsay from the Aztec club and Coach Rocky Long joining him at today’s meeting.

Vicky Mallet spoke to the guests about a million reasons to join Rotary, and our Rotary club in particular. Vicky mentioned how we are engaged in a community service project each month such as painting buildings, growing gardens, passing out dictionaries, providing water at Stand Down and helping out with holiday gift baskets at the Community Resource Center. She also touched on our international projects in India, Sri Lanka, Turkey and El Salvador. Really well done Vicky.

Head Coach of the Fighting Aztecs, Rocky Long, spoke to us about the upcoming San Diego State University Aztec football season and all things SDSU sports. Coach Rocky challenged us with trivia questions about SDSU football. If the answer given was incorrect, $5 went into the kitty. Don’t know if we call it a fine or more happy dollars. Coach asked six questions. They answers were all incorrect. That meant two things: our Rotarians don’t know their SDSU trivia and they contributed $30 to the pot. Thank you getting close to the correct answer: Kevin Cahill, Susan Hennenfent, Malcolm Koll and Diane Huckabee. They gave the old college try and came up just a bit short.

The best part of the trivial pursuit? Rocky matched the pot and put in $30 of his own dough. Now, when was the last time a speaker gave happy dollars to us? I ask you.

Coach told us that the football team has been to four straight post season bowl games. A SDSU record. Only 29 out of 131 division 1 schools can boast about that. And, only Stanford and SDSU in California can claim that distinction. Also, SDSU has been to seven bowl games since becoming a division 1 school in 1978. Four those have come in the past four years. State has won 2 of those 7. Both wins came in the past 4 years.

So, that pretty much was our spec-aztecularly great meeting today.

Remember, Fight on and on ye Aztec men; Sons of Montezuma; We will win again; Keep your spirits high; Never bow a knee; We will fight till victory. Fight on and on ye Aztec men; Proudly raise your banners high; For it’s the Red and Black; Hail to our team; San Diego Aztecs fight!
