During its recent Celebration of Service, the Del Mar-Solana Beach Rotary Club reviewed - with information and photographs - the many local and international humanitarian projects it supported over the soon-to-be-ending Rotary year, and also the fun and fulfillment Rotarians had making it happen.

Ellen Griffin, Community Service Chair, identified the 25 local organizations the club provided volunteer help to and the 17 that received funding.  They included Just in Time for Foster Youth, Reality Changers, YMCA Summer Camp (for foster children), Community Resource Center, La Clase Magica, Stand Down (for homeless vets), Pegasus Rising, and many others.

International Service Chair, Ken Barrett, reported on the funding of medical supplies and weekly physician/nurse visits to the club-supported medical clinic in El Salvador; improvements and training at the Bidadhi, India, village training center; five $1,000 emergency shelter boxes for earthquake-stricken Nepal; and uniforms and supplies to allow Tijuana dump students to attend public school.

Kevin Cahill, New Generations/Vocational Service Chair, identified DM-SB Rotary’s increased sponsorship of Model UN delegates, Canyon Crest Academy scholarships, and Rotary’s LEAD and RYLA leadership programs that included students from CCA, Reality Changers, and Barrio Logan College Institute.

Bocce Chair, Vicky Mallet, summed it all up with an overview of DM-SB Rotary’s last Bocce tournament.  She stressed that the actual amount of proceeds wasn’t the focus but, instead, the number of people touched and lives changed.  DM-SB Rotary’s annual bocce tournament is the engine that allows it to do what it does so well – helping others.
